A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World

· 26 February 2026

Boy goes on adventure across a post apocalyptic UK with his loyal terrier by his side. Count me in. I love a human and dog best friend duo sailing the open seas, wandering abandoned lands and hunting rabbits for dinner. This loveable pair of characters come from an age where humans can no longer have children. On planet Earth, a strange phenomenon everybody calls the Gelding happened where people could no longer create or bare children, dogs included. In Griz and Jip’s apocalypse, humans started going extinct. The ones who are still living on and surviving are building whole new worlds for themselves, while scrapping and learning from the old world. And the few men and women who could still have children and weren’t affected by the Gelding, made families and homes. Though, it wasn’t enough to sustain humanity and now the world is almost barren. Griz and his siblings were born after the Gelding and into this new civilization. All that they know and learn about the before world is through books, photographs, lost items and treasures and almost anything they can find when looting and scavenging on different lands. The family’s island of Mingulay that is surrounded by ocean is all Griz has ever known, besides his home schooling and knowledge gained from his avid passion for reading books. He then leaves his family and the island all behind when a visitor on a boat comes passing through and steals his other dog Jess, the sister of Jip. Bound by his love for his dogs and his calling to explore places like the ones in his storybooks, Griz goes searching for the thief along with Jip to rescue Jess and bring her home. Travelling by water and land, Griz and Jip invites readers of their tale to journey through surreal landscapes overgrown by nature and wildlife. Some basic necessities are a rucksack, first aid, bow and arrows, a dog to venture with you, if you have one, a sleeping pad and spare clothes. Other valuable things like shelter and hidden artifacts from the old times like candles, can be found in the decaying houses and structures of other lands. You never know what you might find “going a viking” as Griz calls it. The only thing you need to watch out for is other people. They are the very real thing you should be scared of.
